LAN modus and local IRC server

Question

Good morning,

first of all I have to admit that cncnet is a great work! I have been playing red alert in the late 1990s as a teenager and it is fun to play the same game with my kids now nearly 25 years later... I am currently upgrading my kids' computers from WinXP to Win10 and while red alert still runs fine on Win10, there is one minor issue that I am trying to get around now:

The LAN cnc irc server (which is started when selecting the LAN modus on the launcher and no other server is running on the LAN) requires admin priviledges to be run. Now I do not want to grant these rights to my kids user accounts and I do not want to give the admin password to them for obvious reasons. One workaround would be to use the online mode whichs runs fine or to start red alert without the launcher but I am trying to fix this issue for me to benefit from the great work of the cncnet lobby.

I do have a local IRC server up and running which I can use to connect using the online-modus (by setting the server in the server file). But I would like to set this server to be used when seleting the LAN-mode. The local IRC server I have is not the one from cnc as I have set it up on a small linux home server - I am not able to use the cnc irc server there as I do not want to change this linux system significantly (no .net, no mono, no wine). The current irc server is running in a docker image which works great without altering the system itself.

So the question is: how do I tell the cncnet5 application to connect to a certain irc server (the local irc server) when selecting LAN mode?

Best regards

Martin

Your solution should actually work fine, just connect to a local server in online mode. The games are peer-to-peer, that means you will still be playing a LAN game like this (hover over the players nickname in a game room, ping should be 0).

The LAN server requires a firewall inbound rule on windows, otherwise no one could connect to it, hence why it requires admin rights. You can just run it once as admin and allow it in the firewall or you can also add the firewall rule on your own. Afterwards you could force it to run as invoker via a compat mode:

Thanks for the reply ... the hint with the registry entry just works fine so the included LAN IRC server runs without the UAC query on a normal user account! I need to remember this when coming across UAC queries on other games... ;)

Just out ouf curiosity: would there be a way to force cncnet5.exe to connect to a certain (on local network but not the included one) IRC server when starting in LAN mode?

I.e. when starting in Online mode it would normaly connect to gamesurge unless overruled by server.ini in one of the subdirectories - is there a similar way for starting in LAN mode to override the start of the included server but connect to another IRC server?

regards

Martin

Nope, you can't specify the server in LAN mode, CnCNet will search for a LAN server in your network automatically. It would be possible, kinda, but you would need to write a few lines of code to answer the broadcasts.

Current version of Red Dawn is Red Dawn 2014

      Last updated 5-29-20

Red Dawn 2014 is standalone like 2013 and still uses Iran Patch/Portable RA that added Hires and better compatibility for Vista and forward systems. Red Dawn 2014 dosen't differ to much from Red Dawn 2013 when it comes to single player missions. The most noteable change is Nod now uses secondary colors for all missions. Five new mission added and one fan made are now included in the game. Jungle theater by Tschokky added and used for five of the new missions.

Red Dawn Online has been merged with Red Dawn 2014. This mean online play on CnCNet 5 (old CnCNet 4 has been removed). Aftermath Game option is now Classic C&C option and when turned on the game will only use C&C95 units and buildings. The exceptions are the Missile Silo, Ship Yard, Gunboats and Tranport. The Missile Silo is needed as it is the only way for a Nuke to be made. The Ship Yard, Gunboats and Tranport are need for some RA1 maps most notable "Docklands (Medium)".

RAED (Map/Scenario Editor) has been updated to the version edited by Iran to use all 6 theaters. At this time the CnCNet 5 ra95-spawn.exe dosen't support the Jungle theater but I have updated the CnCNet 5 lobby's map preview generator so when/if CnCNet 5 updates the ra95-spawn.exe to use the Jungle theater things are ready to go.

      System Requirements
Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7. Launcher and configuration tool require the .Net 2.0 framework. I think you could run on Win95 to ME with out the Launcher and configuration tool by starting the game from the RA95.exe. You may be able to get it to work on Linux and Mac with tweaks. PortableRA's Linux and Mac tabs should be able to help http://iran.cnc-comm.com/ra/

I'm keeping support for Red Dawn 2012 as there is small change of systems out there that won't work with the Iran patch setup. Also it is a good source for modders looking for C&C 95 building and units that are already converted for use in RA1.

      System Requirements
Windows 95, 98 2000, Me, XP, Vista or 7. You may be able to get it to work on Linux with tweaks. I tested Red Dawn on Win 7 however if it is not working on Vista or 7 you can try ddraw.dll by Hifi http://hifi.iki.fi/cnc-ddraw/#download has download link and configuration.

We removed the macOS downloads since Apple dropped support for 32-bit applications in their latest version of macOS (10.15 Catalina).
Downloads might be added again at a later point once there is a solution for supporting the new macOS Catalina.

If you're running a older version of macOS:

You can still download our old version, but it isn't supported by us anymore and we can't really help you with it if there are issues...
      http://funkyfr3sh.cnc-comm.com/files/CnCNet.dmg

Note: On macOS mojave you'll need to manually give “Accessibility” permissions to CnCNet to be able to play or else you'll end up with a black screen.

If you're running the new macOS Catalina 10.15:

      Use bootcamp: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468

      Hi
I am playing with 6 friends online with "cncnet 5" and we allways have the same units. I saw that the aftermath expension have a lot of new one that we would like to try. Can you explain me very simply how can we do that? I changed Rules.ini to see if its adding something in skirmish and i didnt saw new units. I would love a simple way to have all the possible red alert 1 units for everybody. The only thing i managed to do is to change some map codes on the map editor to have both allies and soviet units for everybody. But i want more!
Please help me!! ive been seeking for a solutions for days!

Uh, I like to try and help the game be abit more fun and ask, if maybe theres a chance to make an Ai for Red alert that gets smarter after each player it takes on, this would make the game amazing making pros have more fun :]!?

I got the original files for red alert via the original installation discs all the way up to Aftermath.

What I'm wanting to do is create a Volkov type unit using the actual build for him that Westwood used.

However, I am having a hard time even finding  the actual New Mission maps to even pull his code, heck I can't even find the ACTUAL CAMPAIGN missions! I can find their text descriptions...but not the map files themselves. Anyone know where or how to accomplish this?
