Recording games

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread that focused on methods to record games.

it would be great to be able to share that epic game or go back and watch it

Please share you ideas and experiences.

1 Screen capture utilities come to mind first

Which ones work best for you?

2 Anyone know of  a utility that can capture to a file what is being sent to the monitor

3 would it be possible to have the client record the game like warhammer dawn of war does

my guess is that it just records the inputs from the players and client recreates it.(very small file it makes)

and you can save them (those would be easiest to post and share) and play them back

this would work best as you could watch what is going on anywhere not just what the person recording is watching at the moment

----------  and if you thought someone cheated you could look at it after and know for sure  ----------

or see how they worked you, lol

I expect it would take a lot of the drama out of the playing experience

especially tournament/ladder games

4 any other suggestions

Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert 1 (latest fan versions, ofc) seem to work with Fraps.

Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 require CamStudio (you might have to Google a way to record audio from the computer instead of the mic, the native support for that is broken) or HyperCam. Fraps doesn't seem to work with them.

Not sure about Camtasia.

All later C&C games work fine with Fraps, OBS and XSplit (the latter two require windowed mode).

OBS is the one and only software you should use when recording or streaming.  It is free, it is compatible with any and every game through various methods (I find c&c works with monitor capture with aero disabled or via capture card) and easy to setup.

Combine OBS with Audacity, Sony Vegas Pro and Handbrake and you have a powerful video creation and editing arsenal indeed.

How do I make bandicam switch res? I mean, I start the game with my desktop in hi-res, and it switches down to low, and then bandicam basically records the inside of an asshole. How do I make it record what's on the screen, as opposed to just the bootom righ 1/4 of it?

Make it easy on yourself and use the ame resolution as on your desktop.

Amokk, after trying many different ones i decided on Bandi Cam. It doesn't us a lot of system resources. It has never crashed on me. Nice friendly UI.  The videos get recorded as mpeg-4 so the video size is small. Has a built in video editor that allows you to do basic tweaks such as video speed. Its deff worth checking out if you haven't found that recorder you like yet

I use OBS, because you can get it compressed on record, which doesnt fill your hard drive in 5 minutes

i am using Camtasia https://www.techsmith.com/video-editor.html to record my gameplay video. Compared with fraps http://www.fraps.com/ it does not cause dramatic fps drop during playing. However you need to convert the output format .camrec to avi before you are able to play the recording in Windows Media Player or VLC. http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/camrec-to-avi.html

I make it using Joyoshare Screen Recorder. It helps my sis and me capture gameplay in 1080p with no watermark. Sometimes I would use it to make how-to videos for my friends as well.
