Improved desert.mix / pal for RA

Recommended Posts

I think I had an earlier posting on this issue, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

So I have improved the existing desert.mix for RA featuring the original C&C desert tileset. I would be very happy to see it in the official RA Online package.

I also had that idea, but I would go even further:

There are some different colors who got the same colour index during conversion of the images from TD to RA palette, e.g. there was a loss of information and quality of the theatre files itself. So it might be necessary to convert all (at least many) theatre files again with an edited palette to get a visible result...

Too, I would try to change more colors (as much as possible), e.g. I'd use the whole fire palette (colors #16 - 31 in desert.pal) from TD as some colors are used for terrain too. At all, You have to check how far you can change the palette before you decrease quality other images, e.g. sidebar icons etc.

It makes plenty of sense. People don't want Red Alert Tschokky edition.

Actually people LOVE playing "Tschokky edition" as the devs included the cave, barren and jungle tilesets which I made, so I'm starting to think that you have absolutely no idea about what you are talking. So replacing the TS desert with the original desert should not be an issue, since it's 100% compatible. If you would like to play further with the TS desert, that should be up to you, but that is not the desert tileset that should be in the official release.

"They don't wanna come play red alert for nostalgia" - maybe yes, maybe no. Maybe they should change all other tilesets for you :)

"no need to force changes on to people" - as I said before, I made jun, bar, cav, and I didn't force anything :) so I think you are out of the line here.

you only changed the .pal?

If you removed or added some shps then it would be tricky to update, need to figure out a good way for it

Yes, I have modified 3 terrain-related colors in the palette which do not affect the icons, unit and ore shps.

Shps modified are:
- trees
- bibs
- MSLO/HBOX (+MAKEs)

Added tiles from C&C desert tileset:
- dark patches
- impassable bushes
- original desert rivers ('compatible' with other river tiles)

It makes plenty of sense. People don't want Red Alert Tschokky edition. They don't wanna come play red alert for nostalgia only for it to look like a different game. which is what happens very quickly with very minor changes. some people want upgrades and that is still possible if they want it so ya... no need to force changes on to people.

Maybe you don't understand what Tschokky did here - Desert in RA actually is nothing official from Westwood but a fan-made mod somebody made 5 years ago. Tschokky just did improvements to it to get it closer to the original desert theatre from TD, that's all.

We removed the macOS downloads since Apple dropped support for 32-bit applications in their latest version of macOS (10.15 Catalina).
Downloads might be added again at a later point once there is a solution for supporting the new macOS Catalina.

If you're running a older version of macOS you can still try to install the games (C&C / Red Alert / Tiberian Sun) manually:

      Step 1: Install wine-stable https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS
Step 2: Download the following script, right-click and select Open https://downloads.cncnet.org/cncnet.command.zip

If you're running the new macOS Catalina 10.15:

      Use bootcamp: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468

On a Mac running VMWare Fusion with Windows 10.
Game runs run, but whenever I go to "Play Online" CnCnet loads fine, I select online, and the chat window loads but never connects / no one is ever on it.
Is this some network setting I need to change (I'm an Apple guy haven't used PC's in close to 20 years). Or is there another plugin or patch to install.
Again the game runs fine and this loads, just can't seem to "connect" into the network.
My father is running this same game on a Mac through the Wine Emulator and connects and plays online all the time.
I had the same thing working but just upgraded to Mac Catalina today and it wiped out the game.
      Thanks for your help!

In C&C: Red Alert vehicle named as "V2 Rocket" is a 9K52 "Luna-M" or "FROG-7" in NATO reported name.
I suggest to improve the vehicle name or make it optional.
      Ingame vehicle model.

      "Luna-M" (FROG-7) – Soviet short-range artillery rocket system.

V-2 – Nazi Germany long-range guided ballistic missile.

If I set  Passengers = number of passengers it may carry (def=0) to 5 for a normal tank, I am able to enter it with 5 infantry guys.

However they are not able to leave the tank any more… is there any possibility?
