Game terms meaning - Quick GLOSSARY

MSBS

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm new here in this forum. So, first of all let me praise the CNCNET team for bringing this great platform to the masses. It works extremely well. I'm using Windows 10 (Creators Update) - via Boot Camp, MacBook Pro Retina Early 2015.

I'm 29 years old and Red Alert 2 is like my childhood game. I stopped playing it like 7 years ago, too busy with life and never-ending higher education (I'm doing PhD right now). It's still very addictive as before. It took me just one game, and I'm hooked. Now it's even better since I can play against human player which is a lot more fun compared to boring and predictable computer's AI. So, this is my comeback after a long time.

Anyway, there are some terms that I don't really understand and I hope you guys could help me out. Some of these are kind of self-explanatory, I get it, but some are just doesn't make any sense. I have tried with Google search, but nothing came up. The same for this Forum search. I guess nobody had asked this before. Just quick explanation of these terms will do. This will hopefully be indexed by Google and newcomers can do quick search to find this.

Thanks in advanced!

Short Game: if checked, players are defeated if all their buildings are destroyed (except garrisoned buildings and captured tech buildings like hospitals and oil derricks). If not, players are defeated only if all their buildings and units are destroyed.

MCV Repacks: if checked, MCVs can deploy and undeploy at will. If not, once they are deployed, they remain in their ConYard form.

Crates Appear: self-explanatory.

Multi Engineer: enables the old Red Alert 1 mechanic of requiring multiple engineers to capture a building

Ingame Allying: enables players to create teams after the game starts from the Diplomacy menu

No Dog Engineer Kills: if checked, dogs can't kill engineers. Don't know why anyone would check that.

Brutal AI: probably an edited AI that's harder than the usual Brutal. Didn't test.

Destroyable Bridges: self-explanatory.

Superweapons: self-explanatory.

Build Off Ally ConYards: if checked, players on the same team can build in each others' bases

Red Alert 2 Mode: CnCNet doesn't directly support RA2. This option is a makeshift alternative - it runs a modified instance of Yuri's Revenge where Yuri's faction is disabled and all YR-specific units, buildings and support powers do not appear.

No Spawn Previews: probably disables players from seeing where their enemies' starting positions are

About half of these exact options were seen in the regular RA2/YR skirmish screen, by the way.

No dog engineer kill "no eat" is a very common rule for 1v1 games. Reason for this is because dog vs dog fights is mostly luck based. so when a player takes his oil buildings in the start while killing his opponents engineers he has a massive economy advantage which is hard to recover from so early in the game.

so basicly its just ruling out a victory by luck. the idea behind multi engineer is also ruling out luck, it does not require alot of skill or risk to try to rush a engineer to the opponents mcv while losing your mcv so early is again hard to recover from.

That's the point. Getting your engineer eaten by a dog is not bad luck, it's just the enemy being faster and the player not being cautious when crossing great lengths to get an oil derrick.

GAME TYPE

Battle: Regular gameplay. Allies can be made during the match or in the setup menu at will.

Free For All: No alliances at all.

Meat Grinder: All players are limited only to basic ground units.

Unholy Alliance: Players start with all MCVs.

Naval War: Naval battles only.

Team Alliance: Teams obligatory.

Cooperative: Special co-op missions (think Red Alert 3, only with separate missions this time).

Land Rush: All players start near the center of the map and have to manually search for a good starting position.

Megawealth: Ore mining is disabled, players need to capture Oil Derricks to get money.

The rest are either not standard or look like duplicates of the former.

How is it not back luck? like i said dogfights are mostly based on luck, sure defending dogs have a higher chance of winning so you can argue that soviets are at an advantage at that because they will have their dogs out faster. if both players are not total beginners they will send their dogs and engi's out at the same time to get their oils in the beginning of the game. if your dog loses and your engineer gets eaten you are behind in economy and if you are around the same level your opponent will have a easy time rushing you, even a player lower in skill will successfully rush you.

Luck has nothing to do with it. If a dog spots your engineer, there's exactly 100% chance that he'll be eaten unless escorted or the dog is otherwise distracted/disposed of. Capturing oil derricks that are not close to your base is a risk, you know.

I was talking about sending a dog up front to defend your engineer, your opponent sending his dog trying to kill your engineer managing to kill your dog.

I will always ask my opponent if he agrees to not eat engineers. if he doesnt then ye i will not just send my engi unprotected. but if you are unlucky in your dogfights you are behind in economy because of luck and i dont like luck to influence my games thats why i also dont play with crates on. you can also argue alting ref's and wf's is part of the game but most do frown upon that aswell.

anyway it doesnt matter if we disagree. was just trying to explain since you said you dident understand the point of it. there is a reason it is a unwritten rule on the xwis servers and also for most of the experienced players on gr and cncnet. my point was trying to elaborate that reason. when there was a topic open in this forums for people to reuest options for the yr client many requested this and multi engineer, thats how it got added to the client.

Sorry, but I don't believe that. In all games, actual experienced players play without any rules whatsoever, with the exception of actual exploits of course. Perhaps a real experienced player (of XWIS fame, current or former) can prove me wrong?

Calling anyone on GameRanger experienced. GameRanger - where everyone plays on two maps that have so much ore that they became the ore.

I think contesting all objectives at all times should be how the game is played. Using infantry to escort your engineers is how the game should be played rather than just removing counterplay.

hi.

I'd like to laugh as much as i can to your post so i can go on and write the rest more comfortably:

looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

ok.

gr players only play 2 maps? how come?

since noobs like you never play the good and experienced people in gr and prefer to play the guys who only play "2 maps" so yes you are right.

you actually have no idea about the experienced gr players yet then. if I haven't proved the wrong yet(probably not) i invite you to gr 1v1/2v2s.

I'll make sure to get a streamer as well so that no noob could talk shit about gr again(just in case you wouldn't bail :P)

hello plokite_wolf

perhaps I can answer the question of a "xwis fame" player

no eat is pretty standard in high level tourney games on xwis....this hasn't always been the case in the past but it has been installed pretty heavily as of lately within the last 7 or so years its been common practice. most common players who know each other its an almost unwritten rule, that being said most xwis pros still secure the engi just incase they are deceived

I also assume the add to cncnet was because of the xwis players unwritten rule, I could be wrong.

@FlyingMustachefirst of all, take a look at your bud in love's post once more and see who started falming...

2ndly, who says that i was trying in those games? you would just engi all the games because of lack of skill...(won't even care since the game speed on cncnet is usually less than 40fps)

3rd, stop showing disrespect to my posts all the time...you're really annoying. @Ferret

lol you are making alot of assumptions, but you are not alone: http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/62083-the-who-is-topic/page-693?hl=heldro2#entry1583085

noobs playing noobmaps are always in the majority. its not any different on cncnet. 90% of the games on cncnet are noobgames, go take a look on the xwis forums and you will see alot of people claiming the same about cncnet as you are about gr. truth is; they dont take the effort to find good games, they take a look 1 or 2 times play a few random games against noobs and conclude everyone must be a noob and dismiss everyone who claims otherwise, i guess you must have came to that conclusion about gr the same way.

i been playing on gameranger for years and there have always been a fairly large group of competent players, now its not as much as it used to be some years ago. last year gr saw an increase of xwis players since gr is superior for 2v2 ffg, ra2 that is. actually, most of the experienced players on cncnet used to play yr on gr before cncnet hosted yr. nobody plays yr on gr anymore nowadays.
