Kosis Posted March 20 Posted March 20 New player here (new as in: I used to play in the early 2000s just like everyone and their mother I would assume), I am into competitive RTS games and rank highly on other titles (sc2, aoe2 and aom). I thought it would be fun to give this a go. It's not really. First of all, why are there a million ladders when the community is already relatively small? In the best case scenario you spread out everyone equally over these ladders and will never find a game. I realize there is an option 'queue multiple ladders' but I can't really learn all these game modes at once (note: this topic is about onboarding issues). Secondly, I can already tell this is going to be a sc:bw or aoe2 experience for completely new players, as in: losing your first 100 games. This is mostly because there is just too much content. There are like a million maps, and all of them have very specific tactics and build orders. Eventually figured out YR Blitz is what's being queued, so off we go. First game: Caladan. Apparently you can shoot the power plant from uphill, and you can't defend with a sentry gun. Freelose. Should also note that this map did not display before the game launched (it was just black) so there's really no way for me to know anything about it except for randomly knowing about it. Second game: No idea what the name was and I can't actually find the map in single player, but the pre-captured oil in the top corner had fences around it and also had unbuildable terrain surrounding it which means no sentry guns. Enemy immediately does some hyper specific full conscript, 1-tank 1-drone rush that is very clearly tailored to this map. Freelose. Third game: 2 GIs get on a cliff and can shoot my MCV and I cannot reach them. Freelose as well. Also cannot find this map in single player. Honestly I don't mind losing 100 games in a row because if I was immediately competitive despite having played zero games that would actually be a turn-off for me, but I do not want to lose in this manner. I want to lose because the opponent is faster, or realized he needed fodder earlier than me, or squeezed out an extra refinery knowing he could hold an early push, or did a nice split, or anything like that. Suggestion: Honestly, I really just have 1 suggestion which I think will fix 80%+ of all these issues: 'new player' button: a box you can voluntarily tick if you have <#amount games played, limits matchmaking to 3-5 maps that are very standardized with no weird stuff. Now I can just play these maps in single player to get a feel for them, and even if I do lose against some specific trick only possible on map xyz at least I now know for the upcoming games (whereas currently, I do not know that for the next game, as I probably won't see that map again for a 100 games, so this pattern just repeats). I'll probably play a few more games, but at this rate I'll be done pretty quickly.
