Allying with the AI?

Hey guys, just a random question I want to ask, back in the day on the retail versions of the game you could ally with the AI in a skirmish, but they stopped doing anything when you did, was this a glitch? Or is there some explanation to it?

I think it's a glitch, it only happens in the unpatched game. Later patches removed the ability. The ra303p fan patch re-adds the ability and also fixes the issue whre the AI stopped doing anything.
