LAN having trouble

Hey everyone, we've been having a lot of fun playing Red Alert on CnCnet today at a LAN a few people have organized, but we've been having a problem.

(11) [23:04] * Connecting... (takes up to 1minute)
(11) [23:04] * ERROR :Closing link: ([email protected].###) [No more connections allowed from your host via this connect class (global)]
(11) [23:04] * Unable to read data from the transport connection: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.
(11) [23:04] * Unable to read data from the transport connection: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.
(11) [23:04] * Connection lost - Attempting to Reconnect...

There's about 8 people here, and we can't get everyone online at the same time. Invariably the last player will get this error and won't be able to join the game. If we try to use 'online' mode instead of 'LAN' then only 1 of us is allowed online.

That seems to defeat the purpose of having a LAN, and it's really frustrating. Is there a way around this?

This limit is pretty high for an online server, normally the limits are lower than that just to prevent someone from connecting many bots and such. CnCNet was just meant to be a pure Online lobby, the LAN / Skirmish options were just a extra goodie on top :)

For bigger LAN events you could host your own IRC server locally without limits, then change the settings of the lobby to connect to this server instead of our public online server.

Another option would be using the original LAN lobby of the game, this one has no limit either, you can get into the original lobby by downloading the installers listed below

CnC1: http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/

Red Alert: http://funkyfr3sh.cncnet.org/ (click Play Offline - Multiplayer - Network)

Tiberian Sun: http://tore29.com/tsins/TSinstaller3-beta10r6.exe

Note: The original LAN lobby will not work anymore once you played an online game on cncnet, that's because it has to rename the LAN patch to avoid problems. You can rename it back to the original filename (wsock32.dll backup)

Hey, I'm trying to play The Dawn of the Tiberium Age on LAN.

I found this: "you can host an IRC server in your lan and use it for the new lobby"[1]

Searched for an open source crossplattform irc server [2] and come up with inspIRCd.

I managed to install and run the server on XP.

After mapping the cncNet name to 127.0.0.1 I could start the lobby.

Problem is when I try to host a game the game will crash (telling something about not being able to connect to remote server).

Do I need to configure the server in a specific way to make it work? (Never run an irc server before)

So I also need a local http server?

If so, does the file have to contain any information or is it ok to leavy it blank?

Check the text file that I linked to earlier. The file needs to list the same information about your tunnel as the official text file lists from all tunnels, in the same format.

You also need to somehow redirect cncnet.org to point to your local http server.

... The file needs to list the same information about your tunnel ...

I was thinking that the addresses are IRC server addresses.

Searching for tunnel I found this:

http://cnc-comm.com/community/index.php?topic=4434.msg33116#msg33116

http://cncnet.org/files/cncnet-tunnel.exe

So there are 3 different types to play multiplayer games?

p2p: port 8054 UDP

self hosted games: port 50000 UDP

tunneled: no ports needed beeing open?

So DTA only supports the tunneling version?

So I also have to run the java app from: http://cncnet.org/files/cncnet-tunnel.exe ?

What does this tunnel do? Will it allow to reach the IRC server through Port 80?

DTA indeed supports multiplayer only through tunneling. I've never set up a tunnel server myself, maybe someone else can help with that. DTA's client wasn't made with LAN in mind though, so you'll likely need to do work-arounds like redirecting cncnet.org to a local machine that contains the tunnel list on a server.

Finally I could start a multiplayer game without a crash (thx for the tunnel list hint). Though after start I immediatly won  :D.

First time it was expectable, cause there was no opponent. Second time I set a medium AI but nevertheless the game immediatly ended. Maybe that happened cause I did not start a local tunnel but selected one(which was not reachable cause I did not have internet connection). Nevermind, next time I gonna try with a tunnel and hopefully a second windoze machine.
