Tore
This day: October 31st marked the release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert. 17 years ago Red Alert sparked the competitive RTS game movement by being the first RTS game with an online component: Westwood Chat. and further popularized the modding of RTS games. Matt
When I think of competitive gaming, it seems Starcraft has been the one who popularized it, especially with all the glitches and exploits that never got officially fixed by Westwood, but Red Alert was probably very easily accessible both in game-play and modding. What's why I said "sparked", not "popularized". RA1 was the first RTS game to have any sort of competitive movement. Most competitive RA players moved to StarCraft when it became popular.
