W8 issues, what causes them?

RA2 (and TS) have troubles running on W8 (and sometimes W7), troubles related to the screen not updating. Does anyone know what the fundamental issue here is?

I'm aware of various DD wrappers, but none of them seems perfect.

Im also going to add while using win8.1 the mouse pointer is completely buggered on TD and RA when playing in windowed mode

That's a cnc-ddraw issue, though... windowed mode isn't an original part of C&C1 and RA1.

The menu freezing is a intel HD problem but lately my cousin had a driver update for the intel HD 2000 onboard graphics and this update fixed the frozen screen and we no longer have to fool with various tweaks to get it playing.
