I fleshed out some of the concepts of this with nyerguds on the dev chat a couple evenings and I was wondering if anyone has actually tried to do this yet?

 

It would certainly make map creation a little easier.

The most important aspect I highlighted to N was that it needed to generate a coherent heightmap (in 0-255 white/black) and work from that as a base.

you could open a randomly generated map in the editor and paste over the rock terrain to make it look nicer?

It is not that complicated of a tile system Jacko, it should be possible to get it right with the proper level of scaling resolution (you can work out curves/etc and estimate).

We could try to export heightmaps from terrain generation programs on the net and have a tool that converts them to specific formats for each game, so that we can generate terrain easier and provide more opportunity for mappers to spend energy on other focuses of the map design.
