Sounds like pretty much every game community ever. It's possible to get some RA games going if you avoid the self entitled people, but then again I mostly play C&C1. Though there are plenty of people in the lobby that don't understand that in order for the community to grow they can't be elitist, if they continue to be the player base will just get smaller until they have no one to play with.

Could you provide more information? What game? Do you get an error message? What does it say?

Sure, installing it in a virtual machine will work. It might even work better than Wine. Wine is a very odd program, runs great for some and runs like crap for others. Though I never like to run games in VM's. If you're on a PC that for some reason can't handle OpenGL properly you can't run distros like Ubuntu. Xubuntu or Lubuntu might work a lot better, Archlinux even better. Linux can be faster than any version of Windows, the key here is can.

Ah, that version doesn't contain many community patches to make the game run better on modern systems. You can try a beta of a new version I've been working on. In task manager click on "more details" then go to the details tab find "game.exe" and whatever other things have the TS icon and end them. The Ultimate Collection is a mess just like The First Decade before it, EA has done little or nothing to make the games run on modern systems. Where did you download TS?

Disabling cnc-ddraw might cause RA to not work at all on Win8.1. Instead use the config tool to enable OpenGL, if it is already enabled choose gdi instead.

Windows Defender (just a re-branded version of Microsoft Security Essentials used in Win8) does not cause connection issues with CnCNet 5. Certain anti virus programs does cause issues with CnCNet, but not this one. The issue with a long connection time to the lobby is an odd one. From last I heard it might be an issue related to the IRC server somehow getting overloaded under certain circumstances from requests by the client. I think that particular issue was fixed, but it or something related seems to happen every once in a while to certain people. Could be a bug.

Changing the resolution in all of those games does exactly the same, In C&C1 and RA1 you can stretch the screen if you use cnc-ddraw, but that's about it. The games contains only graphics in one size. That's pretty much what changing the resolution does for 2D and "2.5D" games. You can only see more of the screen as the content in the game can't adapt.

They are black because XCC Mixer can't find the color palettes to show the images. Find as many .pal files in the mix files and extract them to your RA folder. XCC Mixer might find them then or try and use these and put them in your RA folder. I think the cameos are stored in redalert.mix under hires.mix and lores.mix. (not quite sure, didn't check) hires.mix is for the Windows cameos and lores.mix is for the DOS cameos. To replace a cameo you either replace a cameo in the original mix file or you give the cameo the same name as one of the cameos in the original files, but you put them in new Red Alert format mix files with the sc prefix such as: scameos.mix

Just start RA normally and you can play singleplayer missions unless you installed the online only version.
