[Survey] What side do you prefer to play and why?
XXxPrePxX replied to Ezer_2000's topic in Red Alert 2
Soviets --> Iraq --> Team with the least risk involved. -
The reason for the spots is due to how it is all set up. When you have random spots on CNCNET you end up sometimes getting placed in awkward positions, so we have to assign spots to each map that is in the map list. Technically, we could double the map list with the same maps and have the different spots, but that seems like more work for not much reward.

1. Dune Patrol -- easiest map in the game, constantly played 1on1 2. Country Swing -- Another traditional map that is incredibly easy to play (but tougher than Dune) 3. Hidden Valley -- newbs seem to love this map due to ease of camping and the regeneration buildings 4. Official Tournament map B -- Maybe not as much nowadays, but always a big hit as it's slightly more challenging then dune/CS but it is very simple in strategy. Either you go early dred or you go more rhinos. Most newbs like it because they get the early dred BO down. 5. Dry Heat? Could go with anything here, LBL / Heck / TOE other choices.

City Under is a very very bad map for yuri. Any map with that many garrisionable buildings to defend is usually a disaster (initiates in buildings are insanely OP, like truly INSANE) AND magnetrons have a field day with the walls, trees, buildings, objects. Mags can sit from across the side and fuck the opponent up. EDIT: Unless you are talking about a different map?? Blood feud has been used before, however, we use Dune patrol as it is similar, but more balanced as there is less hills/trees on dune (mags like the hills/trees).

Have you seen my post in "Map List" Thread in testers forum? I suggested something similar, but more maps. Frequency prefers a smaller map list compared to my proposal. It's something to debate/talk about at a later time methinks.

Dune Patrol Heartland Reconcile Divide and Conquer Offense Defense Hidden Valley Dustbowl Hammer and Sickle Country Swing Sahara Mirage Montana DMZ Coldest Peak Dry Heat **NOTE: This map pool is going to change, it is the way it is right now as we are limited in functionality. This is just to balance Yuri best we can why the alpha goes on, until we get the better functionality.

Awesome! I've been watching for channels to stream QM.

It's a good time to get discussion going on potential good maps for QM. We have other topics for AvS / SvA (Check: https://forums.cncnet.org/topic/7420-question-yr-quick-match-map-pool/?page=2), but I wanted to dedicate this topic to the main problem plauging the YR QM scene since day one: competitive maps vs. Yuri. This topic is NOT about other balancing options available/editing the game. This is strictly about the maps available to us. What do we know? We already are very familiar with the WOL maps (all the original maps: think Heartland, CS, etc). We've had years of experience on many of these maps on YR XWIS QM, so we've come up with somewhere around 10-14 maps that work well for yuri combat. There's some minor discrepancies here and there, but overall -- the community knows what it's doing with these maps. What do we Need? I am looking for opinions on the newer maps adapted from RA2 QM and other avenues. Maps like Reconcile, Divide and Conquer, and Coldest Peak, which are already in QM currently on CNCNet. I am looking for people to give their opinions on other new maps that *might* work in QM for yuri war. (TL:DR VERSION)Some minor discrepancies that I am looking at right now are: - Dry Heat (AvY) Do you think this is a fair battle for allieds? - Hamer and Sickle (SvY) Is this fair for Soviets? - What is your opinion on Reconcile, Divide and Conquer, Coldest Peak for Yuri war (SvY / AvY)? - What other (non-WOL original) maps should be considered for a competitive YvS and/or YvA 1on1? - Have other thoughts on the maps for yuri combat? Post it here.

Many of the search functions/statistics are still coming, I am assuming. It likely is unfinished currently. For now, you can use CONTROL+F on the ladder page and type in your nickname to go to your player.

Yeah, it's not *hard* for a pro player to play random on any given month and reach top 10. It is pretty hard to reach rank 1 as random. I recall Tomi and Marko winning Ra2 months as Germany just to show off for instance. But it does make your life 10x more miserable when you are in the wrong situation. And on YR, if you are any soviet side other than Iraq, you are basically fucked vs. a good yuri player.

Sarcasm x 100?

Hi @Turky22 First of all, do you really want a PC JUST to play YR/Ra2? If so, then yes -- you can get by with an extremely bare-bones computer and you definitely should. Some of the newer computers actually struggle to play YR/Ra2 for whatever reasons. You basically want a basic windows computer (NOT windows 10 as windows 10 causes problems). I see no reason why the computer in your initial specs would not work for Ra2/YR however that is an extremely basic computer with only 4GB ram, 80 GB hard drive and basic graphics. I haven't played Ra2/YR on that type of computer so I'm not sure how much online lag you would have -- but it would work. You sure you can't find a PC better for basically the same $$$$ you'd spend on that? There's got to be some pretttttty cheap PC's out there.

This post is God-level status on this topic. The goldilocks zone of maps is a great word choice here. I don't want to analyze map-by-map right now in this topic (saving that for the map list for QM later), but I always thought that Country Swing is a perfect candidate. As a soviet player, I always hated getting this map as I felt I didn't have my normal soviet advantages, but still always ended up having a game that resulted in skill winning out. Allieds have a good ability here to tech while soviets have a good ability to go mass war and you get the true SvA games of deso vs. allied tech and curtain becomes very important.

The difference between engi rushing and seal rushing is that a seal requires AFC + warfac + announcement to all players + slightly more $$$ which is important in the beginning of the game. I welcome all opponents to seal lame me, it's almost auto-win for me as a soviet if it fails. Of course, against the pro players with great control, any lame move is turned into a deadly weapon, but most of the competition can't control multi-attacks to make it devastating :p. Justin is one fucker that comes to mind who does have the control and multiple attacks to make a seal-rush deadly. Combine the seal ifv with rockies / grizz / para and it's almost impossible to stop on a large map with base spread out.
-
Absolutely not if you made the seal to combat the deso say after 3-5 minutes or so into the game. It's much more questionable when you go straight to the seal-ifv rush within 2 minutes. Then it's on par or worse then an engi-rush. Personally, I don't mind being 'lamed' tho, as I usually stop it 80% of the time or more and then it becomes an easy win. After both teams have some units and you are using the seal to counter a deso, the seal to C4 buildings is a perfectly fine tactic as there is no reason that the soviet opponent should not be able to stop it/see it. Good topic, btw.

So, let's sum up this topic: 1) Generally, Soviets are overpowered compared to allies. 2) Superweapons gives the soviet side much more than they help the Allied side. However, they may be necessary to give the Soviet side a chance late game vs. an allied force. 3) There are situations in the game that make each side more overpowered than the other, but there are more situations where the soviets are the less risky play. 4) Maps are the most important indicator of whether or not a game is balanced. /Thread.

For a fun note: Player Desolator is 62-5, all 5 loses come to Marsh. That means he is undefeated against the rest of the field. Pretty damn good.
-
Who's CleaR? Guy has nice stats at 32-4, https://staging.cnc-comm.com/ladder/10-2017/yr/player/CleaR
-
Yeah -- I mean -- you hit the nail on the head again in this thread. Everything truly is secondary to map selection.

I think people might be missing the point of CekaJ's list. Perhaps, CekaJ simply is trying to make a one rule fits all to keep the analysis out of it and immediately balance the game. I don't really see a big problem with that in a small tournament setting. He is simply stating, there's too much debate, there's some obvious holes, let's fix the hole by covering it up and covering up any surrounding area. The problem, of course, is what we have discussed in this thread. It's not always that simple when taking into consideration different aspects. Is France overpowered? I'd argue hell no! On over 50% of the maps the France grand cannon has literally no use, it's worse then Germany! Of course, there's a select 10% of maps where France is indeed incredibly overpowered and broken (First one that comes to mind quickly is Offense Defense). So the competitive ban list (CBL) is simply saying, fuck all the considerations, just ban it since it breaks the game on certain maps. The CBL does what it intends to do... it makes the game very balanced/simple across the board. We can then analyze it and say that without superweapons being on, maybe soviets are at a disadvantage late game vs. allied players. Or we could say, what is Yuri's Revenge without yuri? Or what happens on Death Valley Girl allied vs. Sov, when superweapons are off and the allied player decides to camp the 2 bridges with mirages and battle fortresses? Ha... But in terms of percentages, across the board, the CBL does a pretty good job. It's just that we are not interested in doing a 'pretty good' job, we are more interested in perfecting the match ups on every given situation and not banning factions from playing (any notion that tries to ban factions is met with strict opposition).

Cool, GG and well played there with the splits. I should not have gone straight to IC on that map (Divide and conquer) :p.

I'll say that I'm currently addicted to caffeine and finding ways to avoid the never ending pile of research work that I have. Does that count? :D.
-
Now that we have a ladder working, we might as well try this thread out to seek out the community members we had games with :D. Who is Just-testing? Had a good game vs. this player :D. Who is niceplayer?
-
1. Do games work for your in the traditional CNCNet lobby? 2. Have you tried restarting the client, and trying again? I get the error as well from time to time, but usually just restart it and it works fine. Is this an error for you that happens every single time?
-
I think it will depend on the amount of players playing. If we see a boom in the YR ladder and it has plenty of players, then maybe it's not a bad idea to do a Ra2 mode ladder. For now, I side with the idea that it is a bad idea to introduce a Ra2 mode ladder, simply because we need one working, very active ladder first.
