To ensure TS history isn't forgotten!

http://www.champ-site.com/

BTW Punker what's this....would like to know some details about it as I didnt play ts online in "those" days

"To be quite honoust we could have found ourselves a new server and this would have taken another few weeks but I really can't find the motivation anymore. The past months TS wasn't about a game anymore. Inactive TS players who didn't really care about TS, found it necessary to spread hate messages pointed at me personally, towards Champsite and towards XWIS. It became pretty clear to me that the 'war' between Champsite and the XWIS TS players on one side and Cncgamer and Revolt on the other side, was more entertaining to them rather than playing TS was. lol frodo eat my balls.

the point stefor was making was that he thought destroy3r who ran cncgamer which was one of the leading ts communities, had made revolt (a known hacker and script guy on ts, who is now in jail i believe for hacking paypal or something) hack champsite and flood it with stuff so it constantly went down. champsite was the other leading ts community which was there first.

stefor in recent years has calmed down a lot and is a good guy, and is sort of one of the founding fathers of ts, he was always there, and always one of the best players, but he cared more about wins/losses than me or c0rps and at times got very paranoid about cncgamer rivalry.

i dont know if its true that destroyer did that or not, but stefor blamed cncgamer and its members for champsite and ts dying.

in reality xwis killed ts.

champsite was a exclusive elite private douchebag website for self absorbed players.  the elite hacker group of ts made short work of their egos. yuck yuck yuck. i was a part of the hacker group and got early access to relay scripts and made a few programs myself when not being graphics staff at cncgamer and apaxteam.

with that said i own the cncgamer.com domain name now.

champsite wasnt exclusive at all. a lot of the better players hung out there because it was the first community to bring people together. champsite did more for ts than any other website.

cncgamer did a lot too but not nearly as much and had a far noobier base of players when compared to the oldschool elites.

also revolt being a part of cncgamer and being around called suspicions because his server he made (cncreloaded), which i was the very first person to test, he admitted to using later to harvest passwords for peoples personal stuff.

i do believe he ended up in a german prison if i remember correctly for theft online, i think paypal as i said.

ultatk u are a nobody and always have been, graphics team on cncgamer? i dont remember that lol what graphics you couldnt design shiat

The forum communities shifted over time on TS since 1999. It went from Champsite > Cncgamer > Striketeam > CNCnet. When WestWood Online managed the servers, Champsite was the community for everyone, other than a few modding forums and websites that some people used. As WOL shutdown, there was much of a division between Champite and CNCgamer as CNCgamer was working on a ranking system. They eventually created a ranking system; however, it was on a report wins-honour system, which eventually fell through the cracks as people wouldn't report honest wins and losses. As TRZ discussed above, there was a massive battle between d3stroyer, Revolt, and Stefor (amongst other hackers and admins). Eventually Champsite closed, and a lot of pro TS players quit or played a lot less. CNCgamer was a great site, full of many great players, but the lack of a ranking system and a supported server, as WOL sold to EA, became detrimental to the TS community. Shortly after XWIS and StrikeTeam came into focus, they created a server, forum, and a ranking system, and was quite satisfying for some time. However, the TS community dealt with a lot of problems trying to get such an old game to work on modern systems, a massive flaw of XWIS. On top of the hacking, cheating, and lag from XWIS, the majority of TS players either quit or moved to CNCnet, and here we are, 15 years later still playing this addicting game.

In 1998 Westwood Studios sold themselves to Electronic Arts (EA) as the then publisher of Westwood's games; Virgin Interactive were selling off their assets in the US.

Fast forward to 2002 EA decides to close down Westwood and integrate parts of it in to EA Pacific (later EALA).

XWIS (Extended Command & Conquer Westwood Online Internet Relay Chat Server) started off as a community effort by Olaf van der Spek in "the ending years" of Westwood Online (WOL) to create a safer, moderated and more supported server for Red Alert 2. Since XWIS is a WOL emulator it also supported TS and older games as well. A few communities popped up to support their favorite games (such as Strike-Team).

After EA closed down Westwood they decided to shutdown WOL as well. As a measure to keep the games somewhat running EA decided to partner with XWIS.

  • 4 months later...

this obviously needs a reply and some clarity as I have started to use cncnet and will be using this forum.. Firstly it is unbelievable that this actually happened over 10 years ago!

CNCGamer and Champ were both great sites serving the TS community and the rivalry we both had benefited the TS community in so many ways. The features created for a relatively small community were really good... I remember both sites boards news' showing off new features and competitions weekly and we all felt part of something. Unfortunately during this period the TS community had a small number of hackers creating trainers, recon tools etc and these people were also hacking and DDOS attacking sites. CNCGamer was hacked and DDOS attacked countless times, my MSN was hacked, I even had a key logger somehow installed on my PC! Not only my site but also my personal email was hacked - the hacker spamming past work colleagues and family and then deleting all my email. He would also delete the backups I had of the site from my personal computer..

The DDOS attacks happened on BOTH sites, hacking happened on BOTH sites, we were both completely powerless to stop it at the time.

That being said although CNCGamer started as an underdog with most of Stefors clan using his site, over time we started to attract most of the TS players. Our ladder (even if it was manual) was the main ladder in use at this time after we both competed heavily for the same player pool. Still to this day I look back on the rivalry with a smile as although there was a lot of shit to go through with the hacking it made me a much better developer and website owner. Every new feature I would make myself while Stefor had to go to their developer "Kane" who would have to prioritise it with the needs of his much bigger website - gathernetwork. This meant we would react faster to the players needs and in the end this swinged it for us.

We were the first website to offer TS replays, supported the XWIS ladder with comments and interaction and then went on to support other CNC games. I was invited by Aaron Kaufman (EA community manager at the time) to the CNC Tiberium Wars summit in LA; flights, hotel and everything from the UK included - pretty cool :D

Not sure how many people were around 10 years ago that really remember the detail but for sure noone would call me a hater of TS. Many on the Champ list of people to thank actually include moderators of CNCGamer who knew me well; we were one community and the closing message is defeatist and not at all accurate!

in reality xwis killed ts.

On who killed TS, WW firstly started to kill off TS by stopping their ladder system and then disabling chat in the lobby.. it was pretty soul destroying for a game I had played for so many hours a day for the last few years suddenly to not have a ladder system and there being no way to speak to others in the lobby... then the XWIS project which only indirectly supported TS while pushing RA2 and alongside all of that our communities were constantly hacked. Databases lost completely, no continuity; why should people stick around? Also something I learned and the reason I stopped owning a gaming website is that games work in cycles and once your supported game flags in numbers you then need to start supporting and investing time and resources into supporting another game. All games generally end this way; look at gamereplays once a massive site ran out of steam as Darky and others got real jobs that pulled them away from the churn of supporting new games as the old ones die off!

i bought your arse. cncgamer.com is mine muhahahaa

cncgamer was my first move into programming, I now develop software as part of my job so it was the start of my career! No time to bring it back and although a little strange having it redirect to some random forum it was a lot of fun running it

XWIS just had the option to do what WW could not, and instead failed miserably. CNCNet has done far more in a shorter time period. What log are you using Dest? Someone sort of copied your log with d3stroy3r

im using destroy3r...

Huh. Never knew XWIS stood for "eXtended WOL IRC Server"  O_o

Heh. I believe that site was actually still up about 5 years ago, despite the main westwood domain redirecting to EA. I think I got that whole thing saved to hard disk somewhere.

[edit]

http://games2.westwood.com redirects to XWIS now. Woah  XD

[edit]

http://games.westwood.com/ gives a blank page with the title "Nothing to see here, move along..."  XD

Same here!! Working on my first clan website got me into web development, which ultimately launched my current career :)

The funnier thing is, connecting there via an actual IRC client is supposedly considered an offense to get banned for. Go figure.

That's because it's not an IRC server; it's a (lazy implementation) WOL emulator. It sends the absolute bare minimum syntax to support the game clients. Generally, you're unable to connect to XWIS using a native IRC client due to it not supporting standard IRC protocol; which is why relays were created - and we all know, that only opened the door for mischievous behavior (host hijacking, internal erroring, auto-starting, etc). So to be fair, I'm not sure we can fault XWIS for trying to prevent users from connecting outside of normal means.

Just my 2cents :)
