Ports, Pings and stuff

Question

Hi all.

This forum very helpfully sorted me out once before. Here I am again looking for help please. I've played C&C through the cncnet site for many years, mostly without any problems., but now I have one once more...

Virgin Media recently upgraded me from 100MB broadband to 200MB for free. Thanks very much! This also meant swapping our router for the latest Superhub 3. I called them up and a helpful lady opened ports 8054 on UDP and 50000 on Both; so I assumed I would be all singing all dancing for future games. I did a port test and confirmed I could play and host fast games. Sorted. Or so I thought.

My pings, when I had 100MB broadband were previously around the 10 to 15 range. I did a ping test expecting to see them halved. instead I now get numbers around 25 - 35 with one of the four pings much, much higher. I know that's not good. I called Virgin Media again. This time a chap reset the hub to factory setting then reapplied the 8054 and 50000 open port rules.

Back into C&C only to find 'porttest' advises my ports are now closed and my pings are still too high.

I'm not very techno but after ages mucking about I have worked out how to open the ports myself so have double checked they are open. I have also got into my Firewall and added cncnet as an allowed site.

What else can I do? It's most frustrating to know that my ports were open before Virgin Media got involved for the second time. And it's even more frustrating to know I had excellent pings on half the broadband speed I have now.

Virgin Media are visiting next week. Until then can anyone help please? (I have a pretty fast PC running Windows 7 by the way). Hope that's enough info.

Cheers,

David

Pings can become a bit higher when they increase your connection speed, that's because they're using new techniques to send more data through the same old physical lines. I don't really know much about cable connections but on DSL for example theres something called "interleaving" which is some kind of error correction they were forced to enable to make higher speeds possible. My ping also went from 6ms to 18ms when I upgraded my connection, there's nothing you can do about that :(

I guess that one bad ping might have just been bad luck, try some more pings and keep an eye on it. If all are below 50 then you're good to go, this wont be any problem

Hi Funky, thanks for that information (   so far :-)  )

On the ports question: I have just reconnected my 'old' computer as a test and it reports ports are OPEN!

Now reconnected to my new PC again and ports are reported as CLOSED!

What's going on with that?

I have Virgin Media out on Tuesday afternoon by the way

Cheers mate,

David

Each computer needs its own port forwarding settings, you probably forwarded it to the old computer only.

If you want both forwarded then you need to go into Settings->CnCNet->Game Settings and change your port to something else on the new computer, e.g. 8055 (old pc keeps 8054)

Then log in to your router and forward 8055 to your new pc and keep the old pc forwarded to 8054

But TBH, you don't really need to forward any ports, it will work fine without that too

Last I checked, the upnp system was enabled by default on the modern virgin media routers. That might be a good place to start.

Again thanks Funky and Myg.

Well, Virgin media came round and swapped the new Super Hub3 for another even newer Super Hub3... however, same result as before for pings on the C&C games site I'm afraid; pings of 20 - 30 with an occasional high one too.

The engineer did over a dozen speed checks using the Ookla site. Each one returned low pings of between 6 -and12, download speeds of 220MB and upload of around 12 -15MB, proving the Virgin router works fine.

Again port 8064 advises it's open in the router but C&C still says it's closed. (If I try to open 8055 it says the range 8054 is already open.)

I do appear to be able to join fast (lightening bolt games) as I've not been blocked. I'm unsure what games I host myself!

All in all it looks like wherever I am now, I'm staying here. So, thanks for the help and advice chaps. If you have any further ideas please let me know, I'm still keen to get things back to how they used to be!

Cheers,

David

A very long time ago I found a Russian website with a RA1 TC called Third Revolution. It's a stand-alone total conversion with new campaigns and a setting unrelated to the C&C universe -- rather, it tells the story of a post-1991 restoration of the Soviet Union and its struggle against Capitalist adversaries. The author had problems with the black/transparent colour in the palette but otherwise it was pretty solid all-in-all.
Back then I downloaded the Russian version, but later forgot about that TC until recently (had to ask around to remember the title). Anyway, the Russian version of the TC is available from The Red Alert Archive, however the developer's page also lists an English version (thirden.rar) among downloads, as well as a music pack (scores_full.rar). Supposedly, these were hosted at http://ra.afraid.org/thirdrev/, but the Wayback Machine does not have the respective files, and apparently they were at some point removed, for whatever reason.
I was wondering if anyone still has these files archived somewhere? Also, it seems that the TC is based on Aftermath 2.02, would it be possible to upgrade to 3.03 Beta?

Running CnCNet server using systemd (Linux x64)

wget downloads.cncnet.org/tunnel.sh sh tunnel.sh 200 "Unnamed Server" If you're unsure what linux distro to choose, just take the latest version of Ubuntu

Using the above method you can run both CnCNet servers as a service and they will continue to run even after the server restarted.

Alternatively you can also run the servers individually (see below):

      New Server (All Games)

      Linux x64 example:
      wget -c https://downloads.cncnet.org/cncnet-server.tgz -O - | tar -xz nohup ./cncnet-server --name "My cool server" --maxclients 200 --port 50001 --portv2 50000 > cncnet-server.log 2>&1 & Linux ARM

      Windows:
On XP, Vista and 7 make sure .NET 4.0 is installed: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=17113
Download the server and start it: http://downloads.cncnet.org/cncnet-server-gui.exe

Note: Servers are chosen automatically by CnCNet and are only used in case 2 players fail to establish a Peer-To-Peer connection. Yuri's Revenge players can select a specific server via the advanced settings while hosting a game room.

      Old Server (Yuris Revenge only)

      Linux (Ubuntu) example:
      sudo apt-get install default-jre wget http://downloads.cncnet.org/cncnet-tunnel.exe nohup java -jar cncnet-tunnel.exe -name "My cool server" -maxclients 200 -port 50000 -headless > cncnet-tunnel.log 2>&1 &

      Windows:
Download the server and start it: http://downloads.cncnet.org/cncnet-tunnel.exe

Note:  To use a specific server you'll have to select it via the advanced settings while hosting a game room.

The servers will not show up instantly on the website, it can take up to 4 hours

CnCNET is great, and since RA source code has been released this is a huge step in improving the game and adding nice juicy features that allow us to enjoy the game we love.
Add a replay system, maybe as an option as saving a replay could add more lag to games.
Fix bug where you can ally someone who is trying to Engi your building which prevents it from being captured
New .ini keywords, this would allow for more control over making maps of all types from nurple to Defense maps
I'll list a few keyword suggestions
Ability to remove darkness crate as random chance Chrono (superweapon) Crate Size of Nukes/Demo Trucks explosions Force Ore Regrowth on (ignores lobby setting "Ore Regenerates") Crusher Flag for vehicles Helicopter Firing Delay Auto Attack Flag (Tanya for example) Build Speed Multiplier (per unit/building) New Triggers New blank units if modders want to add them to maps. (Like Ferrets Tiberian Alert mod)

I told you my scroll was broken and it was. I played the entire match holding right click to move across the screen. I think you think I b.s.'d you to get you to commit or something. That is not at all the case.
This was on the CNC remastered ladder.

Current version of Red Dawn is Red Dawn 2014

      Last updated 5-29-20

Red Dawn 2014 is standalone like 2013 and still uses Iran Patch/Portable RA that added Hires and better compatibility for Vista and forward systems. Red Dawn 2014 dosen't differ to much from Red Dawn 2013 when it comes to single player missions. The most noteable change is Nod now uses secondary colors for all missions. Five new mission added and one fan made are now included in the game. Jungle theater by Tschokky added and used for five of the new missions.

Red Dawn Online has been merged with Red Dawn 2014. This mean online play on CnCNet 5 (old CnCNet 4 has been removed). Aftermath Game option is now Classic C&C option and when turned on the game will only use C&C95 units and buildings. The exceptions are the Missile Silo, Ship Yard, Gunboats and Tranport. The Missile Silo is needed as it is the only way for a Nuke to be made. The Ship Yard, Gunboats and Tranport are need for some RA1 maps most notable "Docklands (Medium)".

RAED (Map/Scenario Editor) has been updated to the version edited by Iran to use all 6 theaters. At this time the CnCNet 5 ra95-spawn.exe dosen't support the Jungle theater but I have updated the CnCNet 5 lobby's map preview generator so when/if CnCNet 5 updates the ra95-spawn.exe to use the Jungle theater things are ready to go.

      System Requirements
Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7. Launcher and configuration tool require the .Net 2.0 framework. I think you could run on Win95 to ME with out the Launcher and configuration tool by starting the game from the RA95.exe. You may be able to get it to work on Linux and Mac with tweaks. PortableRA's Linux and Mac tabs should be able to help http://iran.cnc-comm.com/ra/

      Old Red Dawn 2012

I'm keeping support for Red Dawn 2012 as there is small change of systems out there that won't work with the Iran patch setup. Also it is a good source for modders looking for C&C 95 building and units that are already converted for use in RA1.

      System Requirements
Windows 95, 98 2000, Me, XP, Vista or 7. You may be able to get it to work on Linux with tweaks. I tested Red Dawn on Win 7 however if it is not working on Vista or 7 you can try ddraw.dll by Hifi http://hifi.iki.fi/cnc-ddraw/#download has download link and configuration.
